Like the concerts, the exhibitions in Haut Allier are friendly convivial events. No world-class painters or sculptors, no internationally famous names, but plenty of works by talented artists, sculptors and photographers from the Auvergne and from other parts of France.

*** Basilique Saint Julien. Magnificent Romanesque basilica - Recently awarded the Michelin guide's top three-star accolade - one of only four such monuments in Auvergne.
* Aquarium  - L'Allier, France's greatest salmon river.
* Maison de la Dentelle, lacemaking museum

Saint Ilpize:  mediaeval castle
Open daily - Free ; guided visits Thursdays in summer, 9.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. Some visits with English-speaking guide.

Former Cluniac priory (11th - 18th centuries) , Maison des oiseaux. Ornithological centre.  Mediaeval bridge.

b) Secteurs Allagnon et Senouire


Hilltop village with dramatic views. Ancient terraces being renovated, impressive castle (no visits)

Historic small town - one of the "Plus Beaux Villages de France"

Romanesque church & cloisters - the finest cloisters in Auvergne, fine mediaeval murals.
Musée populaire. Folk museum. Open daily.
