The
high valley of the Allier heritage area stretches from
Auzon in the north to Pébrac in the south, and includes the communes
(rural areas) of Auzon, Bournoncle St. Pierre, Brioude,
Vieille Brioude,
Saint Ilpize,
Villeneuve d'Allier, Blassac, Lavoûte Chilhac, Chilhac,
Aubazat, Langeac, Chanteuges, Saint Arcons, Prades, and more.
It includes the valleys of the Allier and its tributaries, the
Allagnon, Senouire and Doulon, and the hills between.
- Aubazat: Auberge des Trois Vallées. Also does catering for outside events.
- Blesle: Hotel restaurant la Bougnate. Listed by Michelin and by Gault et Millau.
- Brioude : Hotel restaurant la Sapinière. Modern French cuisine, good quality and excellent value.
- Brioude: Hôtel de la Poste - Modern French cuisine, good quality and excellent value. Michelin listed, 1 star with Gault et Millau
- Brioude : Le Saint Julien, Good quality traditional restaurant and pizzeria just behind the Basilica
- Brioude; hotel restaurant La Vieille Auberge. Good value.
- Brioude; restaurant Lard dans l'assiette. Small restaurant, modern tranditional French cuisine
- Brioude; restaurant L'Etoile d'Olinda. Small Portuguese restaurant
- Brioude; Orfenor. A backpacker-style bar-restaurant serving international food. Run by an Australian, an American and their French partners
- Brioude; Le Cardigan's. Traditional town-centre restaurant located next to the Doyenné arts centre. Brioude is twinned with the Welsh town of Cardigan.
- Brioude; McDonalds. Beside the man road north out of Brioude. Useful at times when nothing else is serving meals.
- Chilhac; L'Embuscade. Bistro with traditional cuisine, locally- sourced produce, great value.
- La Chomette (N 102 à 5 km de Lavaudieu): Hôtel Restaurant la Crèche. Traditional French cuisine - copious servings
- Langeac: Auberge de l'Ile Amour
- Langeac: Hotel-restaurant de l'Avenue
- Langeac: Restaurant le Trefle à quatre feuilles (the Four-leafed Clover). Serves organic and locally sourced food.
- Lavaudieu: Auberge de l'Abbaye - Listed with Gault et Millau
- Lavaudieu: Restaurant Court Lavigne - listed by both Michelin and Gault et Millau.
- Lavoûte Chilhac: Hotel-restaurant Le Prieuré - in a wing of the historic 18th century abbey
- Mazeyrat d'Allier: Le Val d'Allier .Traditional French cuisine, good value
- Paulhaguet: La Villa Caprara .Traditional modern French cuisine.
- Salzuit, near Paulhaguet. Hôtel spa restaurant le Saint Roch. A recently renovated small chateau with a restaurant serving modern French cuisine
- Vergongheon, north of Brioude. La Petite Ecole . The only local restaurant with a Michelin bib gourmand (good food) label. (But far from being the only local restaurant serving good food...)

"Music-valley"
is the high valley of the river Allier, covering the rural district
areas of Brioude and
Langeac, in the department of Haute Loire, Auvergne,
southern
France.
The music
season
in the valley is a relaxed affair, and unique in rural France by its
extent and its duration. The venues are mostly small, the
performers good - often top quality, but the prices reasonable. Some
concerts are
"give what you want", some are free, most are less than 20 Euros. Only
the full concerts in the basilica at Brioude and those organised by the
La Chaise Dieu music festival are a bit more. Unlike any other summer
music programme in rural France (and there are plenty of them), this is
a fringe without a festival, two months of music for
pleasure, organised by musicians themselves, volunteers, villages and
cultural associations.Musique
