In
the heart of the Auvergne, and just off the A75 motorway, "Music-valley" is the High valley of the river
Allier and its tributaries around the small towns of Brioude and
Langeac, in the department of Haute Loire, a rural area with a
remarkably rich musical life during the summer months. It
includes the communes of Brioude, Vieille Brioude, Saint Ilpize,
Villeneuve d'Allier, Blassac, Lavoûte Chilhac, Chilhac, Aubazat,
Reilhac, Langeac Chanteuges and others.
Well away from any mass tourism area, this part of the Auvergne has no large hotels or holiday resorts; accommodation is provided by small hotels, gites and holiday cottages, bed and breakfasts or campsites. Nothing flash, but plenty of good quality...

Auzon:*** Collegiate church. - a small Romanesque church with medieval frescoes
Brioude
*** Basilique Saint Julien. Magnificent Romanesque basilica - with Michelin guide's top three-star accolade - one of only four such monuments in Auvergne. A showcase of medieval art and sculpture, including St Michael's chapel (photo top of page) remarkably well preserved 13th/14th century frescoes. Guided visits daily.

Music in the Auvergne -
The music
season
in the valley is a relaxed affair, and unique in rural France by its
extent and its duration. Apart from thge Basilica in Brioude, the
venues are mostly small, the
performers good - often top quality, but the prices
reasonable. Unlike any other summer
music programme in rural France (and there are plenty of them), this is
a fringe without a festival, two months of music for
pleasure, organised by musicians themselves, volunteers, villages and
